Illinois-based Hyzon builds high-performance hydrogen fuel cell systems, and they’ve been running a fuel cell-powered refuse truck in Australia since last fall. Earlier this year Hyzon partnered with refuse body builder New Way to build and test North America’s first fuel cell-powered refuse truck. The prototype truck is in San Francisco and is currently being tested by refuse company Recology.
In a recent interview, Kenworth looks ahead at production of their hydrogen fuel cell solutions for Class 8 trucks in partnership with Toyota. Kenworth also highlights the challenges with infrastructure to support their battery-electric trucks, but they are taking an active role in selling a line of PACCAR chargers and providing partner and tech solutions for their customers.
A growing number of students across the country returned to school this year riding in an electric school bus (ESB). Oakland, California-based Zum is the first to launch a fleet of all-electric school buses. They are installing thousands of ESBs for the Oakland Unified School District. Zum is a transportation-as-a-service startup with plans to electrify 10,000 school buses over the next few years. Zum is also working with a local utility to tap their spare battery capacity to support the power grid.

Hyundai has revealed the new 2025 IONIQ 5 electric SUVs. The unveiling was at a new dealership in Savannah, Georgia. The new model comes with charging ports compatible with Tesla’s network of 17,000 Supercharger stations across the United States.
