The Biden administration has announced a clean car rule designed to shift the nation toward electric vehicles (EVs) and require strict limits on climate pollution from passenger cars. The rule is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 7.2 billion metric tons through 2025 by targeting the transportation sector. Earlier this week New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced an award of $77 million in competitive grants to expand the number of electric school buses and trucks on city streets.

But wait, there is even more. Cummins and Ballard are among those receiving Department of Energy hydrogen supply chain funding under President Biden’s $1 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure law. $750 million was awarded to 52 projects. Caterpillar, Ballard, General Motors and Cummins are among the recipients. National Grid aims to improve the grid in New York by rebuilding more than 1,000 miles of transmission line. They will make a $4 billion investment in the state’s electricity transmission system.

CALSTART members Phoenix Motorcars and InductEV have partnered to integrate wireless charging technology for EV fleets. The partnership will offer potential wireless inductive charging in duty cycles and recurring routes with a focus on software, hardware, and cooling and electrical systems integration. They are accepting orders for wireless charging of Class 4 shuttles and deployment is expected this year.

Rivian has officially gained access to Tesla’s Supercharger network with free adapters. Rivian owners are now able to charge their electric trucks. The company was among the first to announce its plan to use Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). In other Rivian news the company is leasing a second Michigan service center south of Grand Rapids.

Hyundai Motor and Iveco Group have signed a letter of intent to work on electric heavy-duty trucks covering battery electric and fuel cell drivetrains for Europe. Since beginning their work together two years ago, the partners have introduced innovative vehicles such as the IVECO eDaily Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle and the IVECO BUS E-WAY H2.

BorgWarner and their partners Fermata Energy and Lion Electric are the recipients of funding from the California Energy Commission (CEC). The partners have received $3 million for a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) project. The project will support the strengthening and decarbonization of California’s grid  while pairing a fleet of electric school buses with AI-powered V2G technology.
