A rapid transition to electric vehicle (EV) only sales would have huge health benefits according to a new report from the American Lung Association (ALA). If the U.S. sells only emissions-free passenger vehicles by 2035, enough pollution would be cut to prevent up to 89,300 premature deaths through 2050 and would realize $978 billion in public health benefits. 

The Department of Energy (DOE) has finalized their national hydrogen road map showing how it could become a major source of energy in the United States with the potential to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 10% through 2050. Energy Secretary Granholm said scaling up clean hydrogen could create up to 100,000 jobs by 2030. 

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle manufacturer Hyzon Motors has entered into an agreement with Performance Food Group to power five fuel-cell electric vehicles for them. Hyzon shares were up 20% after the news was announced. If all things go as planned, Hyzon could see an additional order of 15 more fuel-cell electric vehicles. 

Blink Charging is a leading manufacturer, owner, operator and provider of EV charging equipment and services. The company has been busy in New York state having deployed and installed 34 chargers at eight locations in the Village of Tuckahoe. Funding for the project was provided by New York State’s Charge Ready NY Program. 

Colorado-based Lightning eMotors is taking the school bus market seriously and in a partnership with Collins Bus Corporation their intent is to introduce their ZEV4, Type A school bus on a GMC Savana 4500/Chevrolet Express 4500 platform to the school bus market. There are half a million school buses on the road today and Lightning plans to have 100ZEV 4 school buses on the road in 20 school districts this year. With recently announced school bus funding from EPA and the Inflation Reduction Act, there are some impressive incentives available. 

Aerospace and defense leader BAE Systems has announced receipt of an order for up to 1,229 battery electric drive systems for Nova Bus to integrate into its buses. BAE Systems’ latest system features electric motor and advanced power electronics. The buses will be used by the ten transit authorities’ members of the Association du Transport Urbain du Quebec (ATUQ). The company has over 16,000 propulsion systems powering transit buses globally. 

CALSTART is out with a new report called “Zeroing in on ZETs: May 2023 Market Update. The deployment of zero-emission trucks grew by 163% in 2023. The report looks at zero-emission cargo vans, yard tractors and other vehicle types looking at which segments are growing and at what rate. 

Range Energy and Monarch Tractor are two of CALSTART’s newer members. InsideEvs caught up with them at the ACT Expo last month where they debuted their 53-foot full-scale electric trailer which is designed for yard operations and reducing the load on a semi-truck’s diesel engine while hauling cargo. Monarch Tractor is showcased in yet another CALSTART study, this one with Interact Analysis, as a key player in the electrified agricultural market having introduced its Mark V ‘driver optional’ tractor. The report predicts steady growth in electric farm tractors.
